Becoming a resident volunteer firefighter is a very rewarding and valuable way to serve your community. It is also an opportunity to gain experience and practice your skills, while proving you have the dedication and tenacity that it takes to be a firefighter.

The District is currently accepting applications for resident volunteer firefighters.

Position:

  • Resident Volunteer Firefighter

Status:

  • Volunteer (no wages or rights of contract)
  • Stipend of $225/month
  • Residence in one of four fire stations (*must be willing to establish assigned station as primary residence – assignments subject to change without notice)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Eighteen (18) years of age upon appointment
  • High school graduate (or equivalent)
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing the functions of a firefighter

Required Training:

  • Fire – Graduate of Region 9 Recruit Academy or equivalent (this requirement is waived if applicant is currently certified as an IFSAC Firefighter I or has a degree in Fire Science).
  • EMS – Must be EMT certified.

Application Process:

  • Application packets for program participation may be obtained by calling (509) 466-4602; or in person, at 3801 E. Farwell Road, Mead WA 99021.
  • Completed application packets received by the District Office will be screened to determine if the applicant meets minimum requirements and training. Qualified applicants will be ranked based on experience and education. Preference may be given to applicants with previous volunteer experience and/or current enrollment in a local college majoring in Fire Science, Fire Command Administration or Public Administration.
  • Applicants WITHOUT REQUIRED TRAINING, but available for regular volunteer participation and a long-term commitment  (minimum of one (1) year after training has been successfully completed) may be chosen to participate in a District-sponsored recruitment academy and EMS certificate program. Applicants must request this special consideration in their letter of interest.
  • Qualified applicants will be required to participate in a physical agility test and may be invited to participate in an oral interview by the Fire Chief or designee.
  • Each candidate must complete and pass a physical exam and background check.
  • Positions may be filled from the list of qualified applicants as they are received.
  • Applications may be kept on file for up to one (1) year.
